Myssy 100% Wool Hats Are Made By The Hands of A Grandmother
Written by PAGE Editor
In the hills of Finland, Finnsheep runs free, roaming the rolling tides of green grass. These same sheep are the foundation for many a wardrobe, producing wool once a year for farmed-based design and wool wear company Myssy, founded in Poytya, Finland in 2009. Myssyfarmi has owned the farm since the 19th century and moved to Rauhansuu farm amid the foundation period of the family company.
Myssy pride themselves on the organic and ethical production of wool that is hand-knitted locally by Finnish Grandmothers located in the Poytya, Finland area. They hand-dye yarn at their Myssy headquarters and from start to finish, create a sustainably made-to-last product.
Each garment and hat are durable enough for daily use. The wool accessories are made to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer with its breathable material. Comfortable for day to day, the hats are special because they will start to take the shape of your head over time, optimizing the fit of your hat.
Myssy is doing a very unique thing in producing a %100 Finnish product. From farm to fit, Myssy makes up for not having a middle-man in their process with fine goods that last. Providing a certain level of comfort that those keen shoppers know about.
Questions were answered by Josefiina Latvanen, Social Media Coordinator., and Hanna Jauhiainen, Sales Manager.
1. What are fashion enthusiasts missing from wool in their wardrobe?
High-quality accessories for sure! Wool is a high-quality material because of its many features. It warms, breathes, transfers moisture, and repels dirt. We think that such high-quality material as Finnsheep wool looks truly stylish and stands out.
Usually, you can see from the clothes whether the materials are genuine or not and we think genuine materials always look their best. In the fashion world products that are made of 100% Finnsheep wool are only a few (or even just 100% organic wool) so here is a chance to stand out at the same time being an ecological pioneer of this still little-utilized material.
This versatile material is sure to look good anywhere, but we think it comes out best in fluffy accessories. In our opinion, there is no finer yarn in the world than this Finnsheep yarn produced by our responsible partners. Its softness compares to that of Merino yarn.
2. Why is wool a sustainable fabric?
Briefly: because it’s 100% biodegradable. Also, sheep that produce the wool are part of the natural carbon cycle taking care of our biodiversity. We make sure that our wool is produced ecologically by small farms. First, the raw organic wool of ours is washed gently to preserve the lanolin - the grease of wool. No chemicals are used during the spinning process and the whole process is fully traceable.
Wool as a material is very resistant to use. Wool offers a long lifespan for the product. We even offer a lifetime warranty to our products. Wool is a sustainable fabric also because it naturally rejects dirt so products made of wool do not need to be washed often (low water consumption).
3. With climate change happening in the continuum, what is the importance of having wool for considerably warmer winters?
In times of climate crisis, we think that it is important to use such natural and completely biodegradable materials as wool. In addition to warming, the wool as a genuine natural material also transfers moisture and breathes. Due to this, for example, the hats of Myssy farm can also be worn even in warmer weather.
This summer 2020 we launched a summer hat (Myssyhattu) which is made of 100% organic Finnsheep wool. Myssyhattu is a perfect match also with warm summer days because the wool protects from UV rays and absorbs moisture from your head. For example in Australia they have already understood this and are using wool hats on the beach, we shall follow!
4. What are the benefactors of wool used in fashion?
In general, we should produce less fast fashion and focus on purchasing more quality products that last. Since wool is durable and 100% biodegradable it’s certainly an ecological material. All these aforementioned facts make wool an extremely versatile material making it a true treasure!
To conclude some more information about the Finnsheep: Finnsheep is a Finnish landrace by its origin and Finland still has the most extensive genetic Finnsheep population in the world.
We find it interesting that Finnsheep is closer to the original wild sheep than most sheep races of today. Finnsheep is known to have wool that is very soft, light in weight, and dense. These sheep have an exceptionally wide color spectrum: white, brown, and black wool can be mixed, making seven great natural colors for our Myssys.
