While struggling to manage it all, we might find ourselves in a peculiar situation, making it difficult to make progress both professionally and personally. Unhealed trauma, dysfunctional family systems, PTSD, relationship struggles, depression, anxiety, stressful life transitions, and grief and loss are all contributing factors that are often pushed underneath the carpet and left there for good. Yet, once the pile becomes too big to simply “push it away,” the real issues start, as these accumulated and unresolved problems lead to irrational decision-making that might cost us our happiness and careers. So, wellness counseling has emerged in recent years as a modern and progressive approach to helping individuals overcome these obstacles.

The Body

Mind-body connectivity is a topic often classified in the category of “voodoo magic” yet what many don’t realize is the true importance of a holistic approach to your health and life in general. The mind-to-body connection has its roots in real science and is more than just a “ feeling”, as our physical health greatly affects our mental capabilities and emotional capacities and vice versa. Wellness counseling often integrates guidance on physical health, emphasizing the connection between the mind and body. Counselors may help clients develop personalized fitness routines, adopt nutritious eating habits, and improve sleep patterns, all to achieve better and more visible results as soon as possible. The lifestyle adjustment has more than one purpose, and often besides the many benefits in the form of high energy levels and improved mood, it often opens the individual to new hobbies and activities they’d otherwise never try.

The Mind

The idea behind a counseling session is creating a safe space adjusted to your personal preferences and standards. We don’t feel comfortable about ourselves and the inner world we have and why should we?! In most cases, we’re vulnerable and even the smallest remark can be perceived as a direct criticism or attack on our personality and integrity. But, that’s not always the case and the difference between a conversation you have with a stranger at a bar and your counselor is that “safe space” environment we mentioned. Wellness counseling services employ techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices, and stress management strategies to empower clients to open up and often guide them toward the solution. An interesting reaction clients often have is that of awe and wonder as often the solution has been so obvious yet it seemed almost impossible to achieve or understand until the moment of complete realization.

Creating Connections

The ability to create meaningful relationships with other people often correlates with our own personal ability to navigate and handle our prejudice, emotions, and fears we might have. The success of many relationships and friendships often depends on how ready we are to open up and become involved with the other person. As a result, we might find ourselves having a meaningful and intimate relationship with our partner and a lasting friendship with a few people we truly care about. We can also only have acquaintances we talk to from time to time and no emotional relationships with anyone else. The idea of wellness counseling addresses communication barriers, unresolved conflicts, and unhealthy patterns. Wellness counselors help clients foster deeper connections with family, friends, and partners.

Sense of Self

The ancient philosopher Socrates would often spend hours sitting on the banks of a river and contemplating life, all this for the sole purpose of achieving the holy grail: a sense of self-awareness. It’s the ability to truly understand your habits, daily routines, and many moves by thinking about the hidden mechanisms that make you want to do any of them. And so, through self-reflection and exploratory exercises, the idea of wellness counseling is to open you up as much as possible and navigate you in a direction that allows you to achieve true self-awareness. With a greater understanding of yourself, the ability to make real and informed decisions grows exponentially.

Stress Management

Stress is said to be the true trigger of many illnesses and diseases, both of the mind and body. Its inevitability in today’s life makes it a priority in terms of managing and controlling it. Now, we can’t control the many triggers yet we can work on your reaction time and response to stress. Wellness counseling equips individuals with effective tools and strategies to manage stress, such as relaxation techniques, time management skills, and mindfulness practices. All this to become more resilient to stress and handle it much better with every new situation.

The need for wellness counseling might seem arbitrary for many yet the reality is different, as many struggle to achieve true happiness and their goals in life, often due to a lack of proper understanding of what seems to be holding them back.
