Reclypt Celebrates One Year Of Circular Fashion In NYC
By PAGE Editor
Last year Reclypt started as the first-of-its-kind online marketplace for upcycled fashion, now it is the hub for circular fashion. To celebrate its expansion, Reclypt is hosting a party at Flying Solo (419 Broome Street, NY, NY 10013) from 4-8p on Thursday, November 17th, sponsored by Tres Generaciones.
The celebration is a thank you to those who supported and inspired Reclypt this past year and to those who want to be a part of its future.
More than ever, people are waking up to the fact that the fashion industry is harmful to both people and the planet; but what exactly is sustainable fashion and how is it attained? Reclypt is breaking the barriers to sustainable fashion by keeping style circular through our marketplace, mending clubs, clothing swaps, community outreach, and more.
Circular fashion diverts textiles (both pre and post-consumer) from landfills, but keeping fashion circular is only possible with others. Reclpyt is cultivating this community. Our 1-year anniversary party is a way to celebrate, recognize, and expand the circular fashion community we're building.
Reclypt is acting as New Yorkers’ trusted source to increase the longevity of their style on any budget, skill level, and lifestyle. The average NYC household throws away about 120 pounds of textiles a year (DSNY, 2019). Which adds up to approximately 200,000 tons of clothing, shoes, linens, and accessories in total every year. This is equivalent to over 4,500 subway cars, and not considering that 10 times as much textile waste is being thrown away before consumers see the products.
As these textiles decompose in landfills (~10-50 years for natural fibers; synthetics can take 200 years and will never fully break down) they generate GHG emissions directly contributing to climate change. Keeping these textiles out of landfills can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage, not to mention promoting more ethical social and economics practices.
